While Dr. Lewis himself holds Pipe Ceremonies in the Native American tradition, the Saturday Morning
Healing Circle is designed to be more eclectic so as to appeal to a wider audience. The basic elements
include: an inspirational reading, attendees' personal reflections, and a shared experience such as a
meditation or visualization. Attendees are encouraged to contribute ideas, readings and requests to the
Circle design, keeping it fresh and relevant. Elements to date have drawn heavily from Native American
mythology, Creative Visualization practices, Eastern meditation philosophy, chakra-based theories of
energy and stress-reduction research. The "shared experiences" have included "smudgings," relaxation
meditation, learning to 'ground' and 'center' our aura's, Zen meditation, using music for contemplation,
using ceremony to release unwanted energy or issues, and guided visualizations to rediscover lost parts
of ourselves and gain personal power.

In August of 2001, Ms. Buss attended a workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico featuring Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona,
a physician and Navajo Shaman. He described the use of ritual by traditional Navajo healers, obtaining
results where traditional medicine failed. He challenged attendees to return home and start their own
Healing Circles, offering that it would change their lives, and those of community members who attended.
Ms. Buss and Ms. Young collaborated to design the Circle, which was launched on Saturday, September 8,
2001, three days before the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.
